The Christmas and New Year holidays are upon us and what better way to celebrate them than by enjoying the sights of Melbourne with family and friends.
Here are our top 5 destinations in Melbourne this Christmas holiday.
1. Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria
Also known as Melbourne Gardens, the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria were founded all the way back in 1846 and include a mixture of native and non-native vegetation. As a result, a diverse range of both native and non-native fauna can be found here. There are an astonishing 10,000+ floral species here, the majority of which being non-native species. With its trees, garden beds, lakes and lawns, the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria make a perfect stroll over the Christmas holidays.
2. Shrine of Remembrance
Initially built to honour the men and women of Victoria who fought in WWI, the Shrine of Remembrance is now a memorial to all Australians who have served in war. Designed by two architects who were themselves WWI veterans, the shrine resembles the Parthenon in Athens which was actually one of the architects’ inspirations. The marble Stone of Remembrance which reads “Greater love hath no man” is a perfect reminder to give our best during this festive season.
3. City Circle Tram
Apart from being free, the City Circle Tram is a great way for tourists to enjoy many Melbourne attractions while running along the city centre’s outermost thoroughfares. And the great thing about it is that it operates in both clockwise and anti-clockwise direction. Introduced in 1994, the service has ten trams in operation at any one time, five in each direction. What better way to enjoy the lights of Melbourne at Christmas and New Year can you think of?
4. Port Campbell National Park
Located on Great Ocean Road in Melbourne, Port Campbell National Park is famous worldwide for its stunning collection of wave-sculpted rock formations and the Twelve Apostles. Put on a warm jacket and start your visit by heading to the Twelve Apostles Kiosk and Carpark before taking the walk to view the amazing Twelve Apostles coastline. You’ll find amazing photo opportunities at every “corner.”
5. Block Arcade
There’s no holiday outing without some shopping so the Block Arcade, the heritage shopping experience located in the heart of Melbourne, is the perfect destination for both shopping and sightseeing. It can be accessed though its four entrances: one from Elizabeth Street, one from Little Collins Street, and two from Collins Street. As their official website puts it, the Block Arcade is the “place to shop and be seen” during this merry season.
Merry Christmas and happy New Year from our Team!
